Film@BirrTheatre brings you the best of Irish, world and independent cinema on the theatre's big screen. This week we have a gem of an Irish story directed by Phyllida Lloyd ("Mama Mia!", "The Iron Lady") and starring the amazing Clare Dunne (RTE's "KIN", "The Last Duel") who not only glows on screen but also co-wrote the scenario!
Herself tells the story of Sandra (Clare Dunne), mother of two, trapped in an abusive relationship with the volatile, manipulative Gary, how she escapes and how she builds herself a house and rebuilds her family.
It's an uplifting, inspiring end to a story with a difficult start. The movie centers on the brilliant performance by Clare Dunne and a whole cast of familiar faces. The director (Philippa Llouyd), who directed Meryl Streep to an Oscar winning performance in "The Iron Lady" and to a more entertaining one in "Mamma Mia!", brings her experience as a theatre director to weave the actors together as if they were part of a long-established company.
And then there is Clare Dunne, who shines throughout. Herself is really her project, she wrote the story, developed the script, brought the production together and delivers a flawless performance. On screen she is mesmerising, she is strong when balancing between two equally terrifying situation, she is touching as a mother hen to her two daughters and you won't forget her turn as Sandra in a long time.
So come and join us this Thursday at 8pm for This week's installment of Film@BirrTheatre.
