"Wicked Little Letters": A Delightful Blend of Mystery and Comedy

For our penultimate Film@BirrTheatre 2024 offering, we bring Wicked Little Letters to our big screen. Join us at Birr Theatre & Arts Centre, where each screening is more than just a film—it's a chance to immerse yourself in the best of contemporary cinema, right in the heart of our community.

In the seaside town of Littlehampton in the 1920s, fiery Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley) has little in common with her pious neighbour Edith Swag (Olivia Colman). One day, Edith starts receiving scandalous letters written in bizarre foul language, and she immediately accuses Rose of being the poison pen letter writer.

As the outrageous letters continue to blight the town, Rose stands to lose her freedom and her daughter. Police officer Gladys Moss begins to suspect something is amiss. Together with a group of resourceful women, Gladys endeavours to solve the mystery, liberate Rose and catch the real culprit.

Based on a stranger than fiction true story of a dark and absurd scandal, this riotous mystery comedy reunites audience favourites Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley.

“The Oscar winner and Oscar nominee, respectively, play warring neighbors in a tiny English village in the 1920s, and there is a glorious gusto to their very funny performances.”

- Esther Zuckerman, Vanity Fair

“In Sharrock’s hands, “Wicked Little Letters” is an entertaining account of what feels like a primitive form of today’s online flame wars, where people take sides as commenters openly disparage one another.”

-Peter Debruge, Variety
