MOLL and HEAVEN leave audiences spellbound and there's more Theatre to come.

If the walls of Birr’s theatre could talk, they’d be buzzing with the echoes of laughter, gasps, and thunderous applause. Birr Theatre & Arts Centre is celebrating a remarkable run of live drama, with audiences responding in exceptional numbers to two recent productions that have reminded everyone why theatre remains one of the most thrilling shared experiences.

Last Saturday, 4th Wall Theatre was delivering a blisteringly entertaining production of Moll by John B. Keane to a packed audience, while by sheer coincidence, at the RTÉ All-Ireland Drama Festival, The Balally Players were receiving the Special Adjudicator’s Award for their creative team.

Together, these moments speak to the extraordinary standard of amateur theatre currently captivating audiences across Ireland.

Two weeks earlier, Birr audiences had the pleasure of seeing The Balally Players’ production of Eugene O’Brien’s Heaven. The response was immediate and enthusiastic. The audience came in their droves and the feedback was glowing, with many describing the performance as beautifully staged, deeply moving and impressively acted.

Audience members praised the production’s atmosphere, design and performances in comments such as:

·         “Excellent from start to finish.”

·         “The stage was beautifully designed and set.”

·         “It was absorbing, funny and moving.”

·         “For amateur actors they did a super job.”

·         “Stage set and lighting were superb.”

·         “Fantastic performances from both actors.”

·         “Wonderful show. Great story and impressive performances.”

·         “BRILLIANT.”

The reaction to Heaven made one thing unmistakably clear: Birr audiences love live theatre, and they know when they are in the presence of something special.

That appetite for powerful, high-quality drama is exactly what makes the current season so exciting. These are not just performances; they are events — the kind that generate conversation, anticipation and the irresistible feeling that something memorable is happening in the room.

And there is more to come. Birr Theatre & Arts Centre is now preparing to welcome two further productions that promise very different, but equally unforgettable, theatrical experiences.

Last Train from Holyhead – Friday 5 June

This gripping drama, inspired by recent Irish history, is full of surprises, twists and laughs. Two men discover more than they bargained for on an overnight train to nowhere. With the help of drink, poker and a beguiling Gypsy woman, they are drawn into a journey that reveals hidden truths and unexpected consequences.

As Irish Theatre Magazine said: “A story you will remember and are sad to have heard as you step off the train.”

This is the kind of show audiences talk about long after the final curtain.

My Name Is Lucy Barton – Friday 13 June

A week later, audiences can experience My Name Is Lucy Barton, an intimate and deeply affecting stage adaptation of Elizabeth Strout’s celebrated novel.

Exploring memory, family, identity and the quiet emotional force of ordinary life, the play offers a theatre experience that is subtle, truthful and profoundly moving.

The work has been widely praised, with comments including:

  • Elizabeth Strout makes you care passionately and deeply about ordinary people’s lives.” Rona Munro

  • I would love it if people felt a larger-heartedness…”  Elizabeth Strout

  • Tremendously affecting…”  The Hollywood Reporter

  • What comes out in performance… is the idea that, even if you totally reinvent yourself, your past remains inescapable.” The Guardian

And Of Course, we shouldn’t forget that from 2nd to 5th July, Birr will once again host Scripts: Ireland’s Playwriting Festival, a four-day celebration of contemporary Irish theatre that brings playwrights, actors, directors and audiences together in the heart of our town. The festival has become one of Ireland’s most respected showcases for new writing and emerging theatrical voices. This year’s programme will feature staged readings, live performances, workshops and new works developed during an intensive mentoring residency led by playwright Eugene O’Brien.

Following the overwhelming response to recent productions, early booking is strongly recommended. For theatre lovers in Birr and beyond, this is the season to be in the audience.

Because in Birr Theatre & Arts Centre, the stage isn’t just a place. It’s an unforgettable experience.
