There are evenings that you simply don't forget. Friday, 24th April was one of them.

Our Stage was transformed by the power of real imagination (and a few handy projections). The house was packed with friends and family. The lights went down. And twenty young and (very) talented people, stepped forward and held an entire audience in the palm of their hand.

Birr Youth Theatre's production of Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was full of heart, raw energy and laughs!

The world Dahl created, with its chocolate rivers, impossible inventions and that most coveted of prizes, the Golden Ticket, is one that has captured imaginations for generations.

On that night, it was captured all over again by a cast who threw themselves into it with everything they had. Augustus Gloop, gloriously greedy. Veruca Salt, magnificently spoiled. Violet Beauregarde, chomping away with unstoppable commitment. Mike Teavee, glued to his screen to the very end. Each one performed with a comic precision and a stage confidence that would make any director proud.

And the Oompa Loompas turned every scene they were in into an event. Funny, sharp and completely in sync with each other, they were scene-stealers of the highest order.

All that was the result of weeks and weeks of hard work from the dedicated crew of Birr Youth Theatre. There were rehearsals, lines learned, forgotten and learned again, last minute changes, scenes cut then added again. The children managed their nerves, steadied their breaths, and got on with the show!

Facilitated by the indefatigable Grégory Ward, Birr Youth Theatre meets weekly, and what these young people have built together over the past year is something genuinely special. They are now an ensemble, a team, a group of performers who trust each other enough to take real risks on stage.

They proved it again last week during their end of year practice when they invited their parents to take part in improvisation games and showed them how it's done!

To every member Birr Youth Theatre: you were sensational. We’ve had a blast, on and off stage and we hope that you’ll wear your crew T-shirt with pride!

We can’t wait to have you back in September 2026, for more workshops, more mad improvisations and another sold out show at the end of it!

Bring on September and let’s take a minute to admire you on stage in this small gallery of the year gone by.
