Film@BirrTheatre brings you the best of Irish, world and independent cinema on the Theatre’s big screen.

America, 1955. A grieving photographer and his four children find themselves stranded in the remote Asteroid City after their car breaks down. They’re soon joined by dozens of people who’ve arrived for the final of a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention. However, a dramatic development during a rare astronomical phenomenon leaves the visitors stuck together in the tiny desert town for much longer than they’d anticipated…

Featuring one of the most star-studded ensemble casts in recent memory, "Asteroid City" is Wes Anderson at his most stylish and playful - Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Tilda Swinton, Jeffrey Wright, and many more.

Overflowing with humour and visual ideas, this is also one of Anderson’s more heartfelt recent films. Amid all the deadpan whimsy, there are also unexpected moments of warmth and romance. While not everyone is a fan of Anderson's stylised comedies, but his latest film has hidden depth and beauty.

Join us this Thursday at 8pm for this week's instalment of Film@BirrTheatre.

What a fascinating take on Wes Anderson's style! I loved the whimsical elements you highlighted. How do you think Drift Boss fits into that quirky universe?
