Film@BirrTheatre brings you the best of Irish, world and independent cinema on the theatre's big screen.
We took a week out to allow PwC, all the way from London fill the theatre with Panto loving enthusiasts. Two weeks now since Will Smiths hugely popular King Richard went down so well, however with all the drama of the Oscars and their actions, its nice to follow up with something completely different - tender and sweet. Petite Maman, a French drama film, written and directed by Céline Sciamma.
After her grandmother dies, Nelly (Joséphine Sanz) is taken to her mother's childhood home. While her parents go about cleaning out the house, Nelly explores the surrounding woods. She encounters Marion (Gabrielle Sanz), a girl exactly Nelly's age and to whom she bears a striking resemblance. The pair become fast friends, constructing a hut together, sharing lunches, and talking over the life transitions both are in the midst of. (Marion is only days away from going to hospital for an operation.) Incrementally, the girls' eerie similarities yield revelations that merge events of the past with those of the present.
Realised entirely from a child’s perspective and underscored with wonderfully evocative autumnal cinematography, Sciamma gently conjures a mysterious story about childhood and loss. Weaving together an enchanting and moving depiction of love and acceptance.
So, allow this to be YOUR invitation to come join us this Thursday, 8pm for this week's installment of Film@BirrTheatre - Petite Maman
