"The Holdovers" : A Modern Christmas Classic

We are delighted to share this year's festive Film@BirrTheatre feature with you🎄

On December 19th, we're offering something a bit different from the usual yuletide classics with a special screening of last year's acclaimed film The Holdovers. Whether you’re a fan of poignant storytelling or simply looking for something a little different this festive season, this film promises to offer a refreshing and thought-provoking cinematic experience.

Christmas, 1970.

Paul, a fastidious and curmudgeonly teacher at a New England boarding school, has the least desirable job on campus: looking after five students who are unable to return home over the festive break. Aided only by cafeteria manager Mary, Paul vows to run a tight ship. That puts him on a collision course with Angus, a reluctant ‘hold over’ student who’d rather be anywhere else over the holidays.

Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers delightfully crafts a 1970s style comedy-drama for the 2020s. With three superb and widely praised turns from Paul Giamatti, Da'Vine Joy Randolph and newcomer Dominic Sessa, this is a charming, funny and bittersweet film proving that, occasionally, Hollywood really can make ‘em like they used to.

Book your tickets below and join us on Thursday 19 December at 8pm for the final Film@BirrTheatre instalment of 2024.
