If you follow us on social media (if you don't, you should!) you might have noticed a few posts about the collaboration between the OLDC youth group and Cristina Ottonello the renown international artist.
Together they were exploring the beauty and diversity of Birr's flora and taking inspiration from it to create an art installation that highlights a number of local plants and their extraordinary characteristics, their usefulness to humans and how they inspire innovation and creativity.
With the help of foraging expert Mary Bulfin, they got intimate with the plants, learned about their characteristics, usefulness and selected a few to use in their crafting and display.
The overall project is called Plant-tastic and you can read a bit more about it and the artists involved on our dedicated webpage.
Plant-tastic workshop at Birr Theatre & Arts Centre from L-R:
Nicole Delaney, Emma Kelly, Ava Mcloughlin, Rachel Moloney (OLDC) , Kaitlyn Morrissey, Lacey Byrne, Shahed Al Moubayed, Cristina Ottonello (Artist).
Over the course of several workshops they worked hard to create gigantic interpretations of the plants they chose and the resulting artworks are not botanical replicas of the plants, but are putting a spotlight on ordinary commonplace plants and transforming them into the extraordinary, with sculptures that are oversized and made of natural, reusable and repurposed materials.
Plant-tastic : Inspired by Nature exhibition opens at Birr Courthouse Yard on Fri 29th July 29, 8pm as part of Birr Vintage Week and Arts Festival’s Art Trail.
It will be open daily from Sat 30th July to Fri 5th August, 1-6pm during vintage week.
Supported by the Creative Ireland Programme in partnership with Offaly County Council.
