Ending this season of Films- AFTERSUN

Film@BirrTheatre brings you the best of Irish, world and independent cinema on the theatre's big screen, every Thursday night at 8pm.

We have now reached the end of our successful 2022/23 season of Film@BirrTheatre, to be resumed again next October. We have had some good movies and some great, as well as some sold out blockbusters! Had schools swinging out of the rafters for An Cailín Ciúin and audience galore to see The Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis and Good Luck to you Leo Grande.

We will put of thinking caps on to continue our selection for another season of film as successful as this one! Not an easy task- but an enjoyable one!

First to this weeks film: Aftersun, it's director is Charlotte Wells and stars the ever reliable Paul Mescal, and brilliant newcomer Frankie Corio

11-year-old Sophie and her father Calum travel to a holiday resort in Turkey for a relaxing sunshine break. As they lounge by the pool and explore the tourist sights, they record their trip on a camcorder. Twenty years later, an adult Sophie looks back on the holiday and her relationship with her father - both the fond memories and the things that have been lost forever.

The extraordinary debut feature from Scottish writer/director Charlotte Wells is an achingly tender portrait of a father-daughter relationship. Driven by magnificent performances from young Frankie Corio and Ireland’s own Paul Mescal, Aftersun dives deep and unearths the unspoken emotional truths that exceedingly few films manage to capture.

Festivals & awards:

Cannes Film Festival 2022 – French Touch Prize of the Jury

British Independent Film Awards 22 – 16 nominations
