In 2022 we ask our visiting artists to tell us a little bit about themselves. We hope that these short questionnaires will reveal something that you didn't know or expect about them.
HONAS will be on stage opening for Lisa Hannigan on Friday the 27th of January. If you haven't booked your tickets already, we are sorry but the concert is now SOLD-OUT.
Wether you are coming to the gig or not, we thought that you'd like to know more about this brilliant Irish songwriter with influences from all over the horizon.
His answers to our quickfire questionnaire might surprise you!
Q- Tell us about yourself
A- I’m a Sligo singer/songwriter with an almost equal love for music, food and table tennis. I’ve been playing and writing from a young age in a mix of styles. My older siblings all had varied tastes which influenced me, and part of my childhood was spent in Guyana, South America, so I was exposed to different sounds and culture around music over there. The school break-time games were slightly different there than over here too, hence the deep rooted love for table tennis.
Q- What will you play in Birr
A- I’ll be playing some songs that I’ve written between 2018 and now. Some of which will be released this year.
Q- Describe yourself as a 10-year-old.
A- I would’ve been at the start of about 5 years of being obsessed with Green Day and other early noughties pop punk. I was thinking about growing my hair long (think that happened a year or two later) and I was rarely seen without my severely beaten up half-size nylon-string guitar in my hands.
Q- What’s your worst on stage memory?
A- I can’t remember having any particularly disastrous moments. There have been a few of the classic string-breaking moments. Having to finish the song with an out of tune, now 5-string guitar isn’t the most fun in the world.
Or one time I was playing in Hamburg and I had opened with a brand new song I had just finished that day, and it went really really well. So I got a bit too ballsy then and tried another new one I had never played live before, and realised towards the intro that I couldn’t remember how the verse went. Eventually, after looping the intro 3 times, I had to give up and admit what had happened to the crowd. 2 or 3 songs later, I remembered how the song went, so I gave it another go and managed to redeem myself.
Q- Where are you at your happiest?
A- I’m at my happiest on days where I manage to create a lot, or even create something small that I’m really proud of. While creating, if I manage to find a flow, I don’t realise that hours are flying by, and then afterwards I feel unstoppable for the rest of the day.
Q- What’s the last book you enjoyed?
A- I’m in the middle of Leonard and Hungry Paul by Rónán Hession, which I’m really enjoying so far.
I thought TJ Klune’s House in the Cerulean Sea was really really good as well.
